Indifference?
17 02 2007A story I read from my sister’s blog, actually a story my cousin told her while I wasn’t around. Well this cousin of mine just got back from China. The story is quite disturbing.
True or not, it’s up to you to believe. I’d say yes, but let’s not go into how I feel towards the story, like how my sister then got criticized and blasted with some crude comments.
Quoted from her blog:
My cousin just told me this story and I found it quite disturbing. It’s about the people in China and how they can be really indifferent and not care the least bit about anyone.
This story is true.
There was this lady who was a bus driver and drove long distance. She drove passengers from far, far in the vilages into the city, to and fro all the time. One day, carrying passengers with her to the city, three men stopped the bus, and they were actually thugs/thieves.
They wanted to rape her, and she called for help as she struggled. But none of the passengers acknowledged the poor woman. They ignored what was going on in the front of the bus! Can you believe that?!!?
Actually, at this point in the story, we believed that people in China really don’t give a damn, coz you only ask for trouble when you butt in.
But one man was brave enough to try to stop these thieves. Fortunately for the woman, they stopped and unfortunately for him, they bashed him up really badly and left the bus.
This lady continued driving the bus for a while, then suddenly stopped and forced the brave man to get off the bus. He got really confused and didn’t understand why. But she wouldn’t take no for an answer, and since she was the bus driver, he had to limp his way down the stairs of the bus.
Off the bus went, leaving a trail of sand in this man’s face.
Can you guess what happened next?
This became one of the headlines in the newspaper the very next day.
All passengers on the bus, including the bus driver, were found dead after the bus crashed down a cliff.
There were NO survivors.
The only survivor was the man who was left behind.
The woman, in a brink of insanity perhaps, could not forgive all of her passengers for their inaction/indifference, bar that one man, and decided to murder all of them and kill herself along the way.
This man is still alive today, and lives to tell this story.
Like I said, I’m not going into what I think about the people in China, so on and so forth. Are the people there as how we perceive them? Do we all react in the same way? I’m Chinese myself, not that I’ve been to China ever before. Is the inhumanity “exercised” all over the world?
Would you have tried to help the poor woman given the same situation?

No one can judge the lady for her actions. Each individual react differently depending on the situation. When people are helpless, people might snap out and will do things that first struck on their mind. Given the same situation, I am not sure on how to react. What people think may not be the outcome of what they do. That’s for sure.
Mav, i think u misunderstood the point of the story la.
the question isnt about the lady’s actions, itz about the other passengers who pretended nothing happened when the 3 guys wanted to rape her.
wud u have helped the woman? or wud u sit there pretend nothing too.
I will help the woman even without knowing the consequences.
That’s quite a story… I must say I didn’t expect it to end like this.
